Mango(Mangifera indica L.)is native to southern Asia, shares similiar names in many languages. A member of the family Anacardiaceae, notorious for embracing a number of highly poisonous plants. Mangos basically require a frost-free climate. Flowers and small fruit can be killed if temperatures drop below 40° F, even for a short period. The mango must have warm, dry weather to set fruit.
Mango flowers respire a volatile substance, causing allergic and respiratory problems for some persons.
The quality of the fruit is based on the scarcity of fiber and minimal turpentine taste.
Mango is many people's favorate fruit. In Hawaii, 'Haden' has represented 90% of all commercial production.
